Koniak to trunek, którego nazwa wywodzi się od miasta Cognac we Francji słynącego z produkcji tego alkoholu. Szlachetny produkt jest destylatem z wina i może powstawać jedynie w rejonie w/w miasta. Aby wyrób mógł nazywać się koniakiem, to oprócz rejonizacji musi zachowywać ściśle określone normy:
* może powstawać w przynajmniej 90% z określonych gatunków winogron (Ugni Blanc, Folle Blanche lub Colombard),
* destylacja musi odbywać się w tradycyjnych, miedzianych alembikach,
* gotowy destylat musi spędzić co najmniej 2 lata w beczkach z francuskiego dębu, co nadaje mu pożądany kolor i aromat.
Koniaki stają się coraz bardziej nowoczesne i potrafią zaskakiwać swoim bogactwem smaku. Oprócz tradycyjnej formy degustowania, ten doskonały trunek jest znany i doceniany przez najlepsze koktajl bary na świecie. Oczywiście dla uzyskania najlepszych właściwości każdy dom koniakowy kupażuje swoje destylaty według własnych często tajnych wytycznych.
