Miltonduff – the heart of classic Speyside

Miltonduff is one of the most valued yet underappreciated gems of the Speyside region, with roots dating back to 1824 – just one year after whisky production was legalized in Scotland. Located near Elgin, in the picturesque heart of northeastern Scotland, the distillery was established on the grounds of the former Pluscarden Abbey monastery, where distilling traditions may have dated back to Benedictine monks.

Over the years, Miltonduff changed owners several times, becoming in the mid-20th century a key component of the famous Ballantine’s blend, and to this day remains its core. A distinguishing feature of the distillery is its delicate, floral-fruity spirit profile – with notes of apple, pear, honey, and subtle spices – which fits perfectly into the classic Speyside character.

In 1960, Miltonduff was one of the first distilleries to install Lomond stills, allowing for experimentation with flavor profiles, although today traditional copper stills are used. The distillery is currently undergoing modernization and expansion, reflecting its growing importance in the world of single malts.
