Ardbeg Supernova Single Malt Scotch Whisky – a cosmic explosion of peaty character from Islay.

Ardbeg Supernova is one of the most iconic and sought-after releases in the history of the Ardbeg distillery. This exceptional single malt whisky was created for enthusiasts of intensely peated spirits and has been regarded since its launch as one of the smokiest whiskies ever produced on the Isle of Islay. The Supernova series achieved legendary status thanks to its extraordinarily high phenol levels exceeding 100 ppm, giving it a unique and intensely smoky profile.

The inspiration behind Ardbeg Supernova was the distillery’s fascination with pushing the limits of peated whisky. Successive releases in the series were presented to members of the Ardbeg Committee as limited editions showcasing the most extreme side of the Ardbeg style. The brand also became famous for a scientific experiment conducted in collaboration with NanoRacks, during which samples of Ardbeg spirit were sent to the International Space Station to study the effects of microgravity on whisky maturation.

Bottled at strengths ranging from approximately 53.8% to over 60% ABV, Supernova remains a symbol of uncompromising Islay peated whisky.

Ardbeg Supernova was created primarily for experienced lovers of peated whisky. Its remarkably concentrated aromatic profile develops gradually, revealing layers of smoke, spices, fruit, and maritime notes characteristic of Islay. To fully appreciate the complexity of this exceptional release, it is worth following a few basic tasting guidelines:

  • Serving temperature: 16–18°C (61–64°F) – helps maintain balance between the intense peat smoke and the fruity and spicy notes.
  • Glassware: a Glencairn glass or tulip-shaped tasting glass to concentrate the aromas.
  • Serving method: best enjoyed neat, optionally with a few drops of water to release additional citrus, vanilla, and mineral notes.

The Ardbeg Supernova bottle retains the distillery’s signature dark green shape inspired by historic apothecary bottles, while the label and presentation box emphasize the cosmic theme of the series. Depending on the release, the packaging features motifs inspired by stellar explosions, outer space, and spacecraft. The overall presentation is highly distinctive and perfectly reflects the collectible nature of this limited edition. This legendary Ardbeg Whisky has long been considered one of the most expressive expressions in the producer’s portfolio, supported by the following characteristics:

COLOUR light gold to golden amber, with copper highlights characteristic of maturation in ex-bourbon casks
AROMA intense peat smoke, soot, sea breeze, seaweed, pepper, licorice, anise, citrus fruits, vanilla, roasted nuts, and subtle fruity notes
PALATE a powerful wave of peat smoke intertwined with baking spices, salted caramel, citrus fruits, licorice, espresso, pepper, vanilla, and delicate fruity sweetness
FINISH very long, dry, and warming, with notes of ash, glowing embers, pepper, salty sea breeze, and intense peat smoke
